[Desert Island Disks] - Iain Lee

There’s only one thing better than waffling on about video games, and that’s having someone to waffle on about video games with.

Today we’re launching a new feature to our Frag Dolls UK website - Desert Island Disks (it has a ‘k’ in it.  Do you see?  Hmm?) We’ll be talking to various gaming figures across the globe, and asking them what five games have rocked their socks enough that they’d want them if stranded on a desert island.  We’re pretty chuffed about the spangly people we’ve got lined up to vent their pixelated spleen, and we hope you’ll feel an equal amount of chuffed-ness.

Our first interview is with radio and television presenter Iain Lee.  Iain started his career as a stand up comedian before moving into writing and presenting for television and radio.  In 1999, his break came as a presenter for Channel 4’s 11 O’Clock Show, where he remained through it’s most successful and popular series.  Moving on to work for the likes of video-games show ThumbBandits and under-rated breakfast show RI:SE, Iain has since been involved in a raft of other programs both on television and radio across the likes of Channel 4, MTV, XFM and BBC.  These days he’s still presenting and appearing on numerous panel and guest shows, as well as holding down one of the most popular and entertaining shows on London’s LBC Radio.

And despite his peculiar venom towards guinea pigs, I think he’s quite lovely.

Warning: This episode contains a couple of swears

(Also available as a part of our Podcast: )

Enormous thanks to Mr. Lee for his time.

Spoiler warning:  Don’t scroll down if you’d rather Iain’s choices be a surprise when you listen to the audio.

Elite (Cassette version - BBC Micro)
“The greatest game there has ever been on any video computer games system ever in the world”

(We know, we know, Elite on the BBC had no music!  That tune is from the C64 version)

Madness and the Minotaur (Dragon 32)
“I knew it was something quite amazing the fact that words could come up, and you could type instructions into it and it would do sort of what you said”

Wipeout (Playstation)
“It was sexy and fast and snazzy and trendy, and girls were quite happy to say ‘give us a go on that’”

Rainbow Six 3 (Xbox)
“That was the game that made realise online gaming was definitely going to be the future, it wasn’t all hype”

Defender (Arcade)
“Release those sounds on a CD!”
