Festive charity work
Jan 05, 6:05 pm

No one likes to help those who are a little ‘hard of gaming’ more than I.  Nothing makes you feel more like you are giving something back to the world than helping a person find their gaming centre and discover their inner frag monster.

I’ve taken this role very seriously for a number of years. For example, I remember coaching my Mother through the simple joys of Bust-a-Move many moons ago. Then a few weeks ago during a game of Splinter Cell, a Frag Doll former asked if I had played Night Fall, the second installment of PC online RPG Guild Wars.  I said no, but that I thought my Mum had it. “Yeah I know,” he replied, “I’m in her guild” I felt a strange satisfaction.

This Christmas I got a chance to do a little bit of gaming charity work again, and I suspect I’m not the only one. It seems the Wii really is the ‘family console’ Nintendo hoped for. Everyone and my Auntie (literally) wanted a shot of Wii Tennis or Golf. After initial protests that bringing the Wii into the sitting room would be anti-social, on Christmas day everyone was leaping about laughing. Bowling proved to be the most popular and after some basic coaching, an elbow in my face and one almighty ‘Wiimote launch’ across the room, I found myself gently edged out the game altogether.

I’m glad the Wii proved so popular with the family, and I bare my sore shoulders and wrists with pride.  And the smug satisfaction that a few more gamers may have been created with the help of my benevolent guiding hand.

Has anyone else been doing some gaming charity work over the holidays?
