The excitement, the thrill, the yearning for knowledge, the sense of better things to come, the joy of knowing that they really will come, and the anticipation. I feel that much of it has gone, and that I have been left a little high and dry. Last year I remember watching the press conferences and having a feeling that new and exciting things were about to happen. This year I just felt a little bit unbothered and as if it had all been done before.
That is not to say that E3 2007 didn’t bring anything new - of course it had a lot of great things. I just feel that they were not as exciting this time round. I don’t know if it was the downsizing or the lack of next-gen consoles being unveiled that changed it for me, but I just didn’t feel the magic was there. Scanning around the ‘net I see that I am not the only one who feels this way, though of course this has probably coloured my views as well. For most of us E3 is in another part of the world and the internet is our main delivery link. This year that delivery seemed to be less of a crazy party and more of a quiet Christmas dinner with the relatives.
I am excited to hear that people enjoyed Heavenly Sword, Assassin’s Creed, God of War: Chains of Olympus, and more whispers of Littlebigplanet. I was also interested to read a lot of the blogs and articles that cropped up covering E3 over the last week. Having said that it has also been nice to see Kitt and Jam’s insights on Ubidays, and maybe smaller events like this is now the way forward. I guess now E3 is quietening down there will be much more focus on events such as Leipzig, and publishers’ own events. I still have a respect and interest in E3, but I am no longer holding my breath about it.
