I remember when Rice Krispies became Choco Krispies very, very, briefly. Funny how many products change their names, and how much money must go into each change. Personally I am still a little cut up about the loss of Opal Fruits ... But one day I am sure I will get over it ... I don’t eat them anyway.
So here we are, at the dawn of the Wii. No longer the Revolution, but indeed the Wii, Nintendo’s new brain child. So far all I have seen is complaints filling the forums about the name choice. But why? Whats wrong with Wii? Are we all really so childish that we cannot dissociate a name from schoolboy humour?
Wii, We, Oui. Yes I think the concept of gaming for ‘we’ is wonderful. Far too long has gaming been seen as a lonesome activity. We who do it know that there are communities, the internet, gaming conventions, lan parties, and the wonders of split screen. However there are those who do not game that still have a slightly jaded view. Now Nintendo has come up with an answer ... a name that implies the whole not the singular. Just what gaming needs really.
So what about the PS3? A little unimaginative if you ask me.
‘Hey guys what’ll we call the third one??’
‘Well the name seems to be working so let’s just stick with it ... but put a 3 at the end.’
I guess it is cheaper then hiring a research team and marketing company to come up with cool new game. What if they’d been a bit more inventive to throw us all off - maybe if they went for the more-numbers-the-better tack like Xbox, and called it the PS infinity? (Just to max out the number usage) Then what next? The PS infinity and beyond, the PS infinity + 1?? It would never end!
The 360 of course we have all grown to know, and thus the name no longer causes the batting of an eyelid. But seriously ... it’s a bit weird. So it’s a full circle, big whoop, what’s that supposed to mean? A circle, is it all the world, all encompassing, round like a smartie, better then a square, to accommodate the circularity of Marble Blast Ultra? What? I don’t get it! There are just too many options ... or maybe that was the point?
Shut up Sarin.
Well Wii has worked on me, and it has worked on others. I was chatting to a non gamer friend of mine the other day who said that the ‘remote control’ look of the controller really appealed to him, he said it would feel much less like gaming, and thus not as sad ... ptttfffff, gaming is not sad! But his point still stands. So here we have community spirit coupled with a controller people can relate too, and not to mention all the colours of the rainbow (well some colours anyways).

So Wii ... yes indeed, wheeeeee!
