Doing Smiley Jam Jam KNEEL, Smirky

Up, Up And Away!
June 16, 09:45 PM

What do you do on a lovely weekend when the sun is shining?  Go check out some military planes, of course! Last week I headed over to RAF Cosford.  I’m generally clueless about flying machines - it’s also seen as a bit of a “boy’s thing.” Which was all the more reason for me to go!  Most of the planes were from World War II or the Cold War, and ranged from test planes (like the mysterious TSR 2) to the well reknowned Spitfire (Cosford holds the oldest one in the world, y’know.) There were helicopters, jet engines, missiles - even a selection of mascots, including a penguin used for company in World War II.  Did you know that your average fighter pilot had a life expectancy of just three weeks in the air back then?  No wonder they turned to some cuddly friends to buck their spirits up.  The Cold War in particular made for grim learning.  When you think how close we were to nuclear war, it’s very scary to look back on.  I hope we never have to encounter a period like that again. Overall, as I am not a life-long fan of planes, it was hard for me to see these - granted, magnificent works of engineering - as anything more than killing machines.  Seeing the WWII Ohka (otherwise known as the “Cherry Blossom"), was particuarly humbling.  It was used mostly like a glider plane, with …

Kate, otherwise known as “Jam”, has a passion for gaming that’s almost as bright has her signature red locks.  Hailing from a small town in Staffordshire, the Midlands, Kate began gaming at the tender age of six.  When she wasn’t gaming, she’d be writing about it or scribbling down stories, winning her first fictional writing competition at the age of twelve and working on her high school’s magazine, as well co-running a girl gaming community online.  Frustrated by her small town surroundings, at eighteen she moved to London, picking up a range of jobs from beauty receptionist to administrator for a mental ward.

Though gaming remained one of her greatest passions and had experience working on logistics for a video gaming publisher, Kate never considered she’d be good enough to game for a profession – until Frag Dolls came along in 2005.  Whilst she toured Europe interviewing the likes of Colonel Antal from Gearbox Software, Chris Smith on Splinter Cell: Double Agent and TV personality Iain Lee on his favourite gaming moments, she also worked full time as Head Researcher and Presenter for eSports gaming television channel XLEAGUE.TV.  As well as this, she began writing freelance features for GamesTM, nRevolution and X360 Magazine.

Jam now works full time for Frag Dolls, still as deeply committed to the gaming cause as she is collecting anything and everything red.  She is a great all rounder, comfortable whether battling it out on Xbox Live, debating on television, chatting away for a children’s BBC podcast, or having a gossip on the Frag Doll forum.  She has an endless enthusiasm and drive to learn new things and broaden her gaming horizons.  In her spare time she can still be found scribbling away, as well as obsessing over Terry Wogan, wasting her money on frilly items of clothing, and scaring herself with gruesome history books.
