A man has a choice… I chose the impossible.
June 07, 01:31 PM

I have very mixed feelings about game to movie crossovers. There hasn’t been a single game that’s made a genuinely successful movie. Some have had financial success - Resident Evil produced a trilogy of movies. That just doesn’t happen if each doesn’t do well enough at the box office. Tomb Raider also produced a sequel, and Silent Hill did well at the box office too (with a sequel confirmed and in the making.) All of these films though were critical disasters, getting incredibly bad ratings and reviews across the world. So why should gamers care? Well for me the problem with these poor quality movies is that I feel they reflect badly on me personally. A lot of gamers including myself would dearly love to show non gaming friends, relatives and acquaintances just why we are so in love with our hobby, and what it is that draws us in. They can’t help but see simplistic interactive cartoons. I recently spoke with Game Screen Writer, Rob Yescombe, who said whenever his father came into his room he’d say “Are you shooting more monsters in corridors again?” Rob explained “It’s not about shooting monsters in corridors. It’s about why you are shooting monsters in corridors.” That’s what many gamers hope a movie based on a game can show our non gaming friends, but when they fail to show the incredible drama we experience, it’s more than disappointing - it’s an embarrassment. …

Kirsten, also known as “Kitt”, has been gaming for as long as she could hold a controller in her tiny hands. She was first drawn into the world of gaming as a six year old playing Pong on Christmas morning . She quickly moved on to PC gaming and spent many a year staring at loading tapes. After her Gameboy era, there was a lull of a few years before Kirsten discovered the SNES in her later school years. Developing a love of Chun-Li, she had her first taste of gaming success after beating the UK Street Fighter II champion in a friendly tournament at a mutual friend’s house.

After leaving higher education, Kirsten took a place on a broadcasting course at the BBC called eForce where she worked in partnership with Aleks Krotoski. She went on to work in many roles in broadcasting as a Researcher, Floor Manager, Camera Woman, Interviewer, Editor and Television Producer. It was during this time that Kirsten’s love of console gaming grew from a hobby to an all consuming passion, as she played more and more games accruing an encyclopaedic knowledge of gaming and the industry.

Kirsten left the BBC in 2002 and pursued a career in Video Games Journalism. Her first job was as the resident columnist for Official Playstation 2 Magazine. She’s gone on to write reviews, features, and columns for most of the games mags in the UK including Official Xbox magazine, Gamesmaster, PS3 Magazine and NGamer as well as many popular websites. She’s currently the Editor of the Community section of 360 Gamer Magazine and reviews for pocketgamer.co.uk.

In August 2005 Kirsten joined Frag Dolls UK as Kitt. Kitt has interviewed industry luminaries such as Michel Ancel, Paulina Bozek, Dave Doak, Charles Cecil and Jade Raymond. She’s participated in gaming tournaments, hosted gaming events, made speeches at universities and trained with elite soldiers, learning to drive a tank and shoot a sniper rifle all in the name of gaming.
